Kidney stones are abnormal solid particles found within the urine in kidneys.
These are vary in size from tiny grains of sand, few in cm and few in mm and can range in color from yellow to black. They form from chemicals in the urine and are unrelated to gallstones. While kidney stones are not caused by personal actions, dehydration from inadequate fluid intake or fluid loss (e.g: sweating, diarrhea) increases the risk. Stones are more likely to form overnight when urine is concentrated. Men are more prone to stones and factors like dehydration, obesity and uncontrolled diabetes also increase the risk.
The best way to detect kidney stones is through a CT scan. Follow-up may include abdominal X-rays of the abdomen. Ultrasound can show obstructions but isn’t always reliable for confirming stones. Blood tests assess kidney function and help identify causes of stones. A 24-hour urine test can sometimes pinpoint the cause and analyzed by your urologist.
